Cover Girl

Image Detail

Staring darkly in the mirror
wishing she was very little
so if she fell and skinned her knee
daddy would be there to say
don’t worry honey it’s ok
he’d kiss and cover-up the boo boo.

And when she got to be a teen
and had a blemish on her face
dad would always make her laugh
and tell her she was beautiful
“Just cover it with Cover Girl!”

Crumpled laying on the bed
bloody flecks bright red on linen
baby’s crying loudly now
Just another holiday
of loving, honor and obey.

Cover Girl and dark sun glasses
camouflage the black and blue.
Grateful daddy cannot see
what your love has done to me.

Cover up the black and blue
with glorious silken Cover Girl

About toritto

I was born during year four of the reign of Emperor Tiberius Claudius on the outskirts of the empire in Brooklyn. I married my high school sweetheart, the girl I took to the prom and we were together for forty years until her passing in 2004. We had four kids together and buried two together. I had a successful career in Corporate America (never got rich but made a living) and traveled the world. I am currently retired in the Tampa Bay metro area and live alone. One of my daughters is close by and one within a morning’s drive. They call their pops everyday. I try to write poetry (not very well), and about family. Occasionally I will try a historical piece relating to politics. :-)

My step-daughter is in an abusive relationship. Mostly control and intimidation, threats and allegations. There has been occasional violence in the past, fortunately not too serious. Yet.
She won’t let us do anything about it. Because she loves him.
    Best wishes from England. Pete.

One of my closest friends, years ago, was tortured and beaten by her husband, who just happened to be my best friend’s, at the time, younger brother. She was finally institutionalized and we lost contact with each other. He basically destroyed Cynthia.

Many of my mother’s friends/coworkers were in hellish, abusive marriages. It is something I grew up witnessing. I still hate it!

Pete and Sojourn – I am lucky to have seen none of this in my life – not with my parents, in-laws, our home or my daughter’s relationships. Our parents never struck us; my wife and I never struck our kids. My girls married men with nothing to prove and I am sure that each of their husbands would take a bullet for them. And there is always a home for them with me so long as I live – no questions asked.

On the other hand I have no qualms in saying that any man who beat one of my girls would not have long to live. It is my god-given NRA right. What could the Justice system do to me at 73?

      🙂

        I hear you!

You were blessed, Frank, as you know. Many people have experienced something quite different.

I had made a similar statement, in my late teens, to an abusive husband of one of my mother’s friends, after he threatened my mother for defending his wife. I told him, If you ever lay a finger on my mother, I will kill you! I wasn’t kidding.

This is not the way life is supposed to be, in any way, shape or form.

“What could the Justice system do to me at 73?”

More than you would think and like;-)

At 73 it wouldn’t last long long anyway. I could live on the satisfaction!

  4. Important post.

I’ve never witnessed domestic abuse or heard about it in my family or among friends until recently. A friend of a friend is being verbally abused (& probably physiclly abused) and insists on staying in the relationship. I don’t understand, but won’t judge.

Statistics on this insidious crime are scary to say the least. Effective laws must be passed and properly enforced and people must be educated. It’s a difficult issue, but must be dealt with.
