You Have A Republic – If You Can Keep it.

Well today is the first anniversary of the attempted putsch by the former Duce of America, Donald Trump.  It might have succeeded had he been able to muster a bigger mob but he came close.  As his minions were invading the legislative chambers a staff member of one of the Senators shouted “Take the boxes!” – the mahogany boxes containing the Electoral college votes. These would have undoubtedly been destroyed throwing the peaceful transfer of power into chaos.

That didn’t happen.  It was all based on the big lie that Trump won the election and that it was stolen from him by computers in Italy that were changing the votes on the computers in swing states.  Never with one single shred of evidence.

He repeated the lie today.  It is conveniently ignored by millions that the fascist Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia was ON THE SAME BALLOT as Trump yet she was elected and he was not.  I guess the libs were only changing part of the ballot vote.

A year later the notion that the election was “stolen” from Trump is widespread among Republicans.  That lie was supported by 10 Republican Senators and some 100 House members a week before the insurrection when they tried and failed to stall the Electoral College vote and toss out the votes of Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin.

My Co ngress man was among them.  Today he never mentions his own personal attack on democracy.  He loves talking about how much he does for veterans.

Millions of Republicans now believe the big lie.  Virtually all of these folks get their information from the likes of Hannity, Tucker Carlson (now there’s a fascist if there ever was one) and Fox News.  The lie gets repeated over and over.  If the lie is big enough and told often enough etc.

Radical sites on social media platforms do the rest.  In the run-up to January 6 Facebook did nothing to counter the big lie.  It, like others is only interested in “engagement.”    Zuckerberg thinks changing the company name to Meta is going to solve his problems.

Social Media companies are shielded from lawsuits based on lies or disinformation on their platforms.  Maybe they shouldn’t be.

A year has gone by and baskets of low hanging fruit have been convicted by the Justice Department of various misdemeanors and sentenced to parole, house arrest or jail sentences of weeks or months.  Merritt Garland stated yesterday that this is how federal investigations are conducted.  Grab the obvious, easy cases.  Get them to flip then move up the line to the more serious cases.

I personally don’t think anyone in government – in the House, the Senate, aids to Trump or Trump himself will ever be charged with anything.  Further if the House is taken by Republicans in the mid-terms (they are trying their best with gerrymandering) the investigating committee will be disbanded and we will never know the truth.

All over red states local legislatures are imposing restrictions on the ability to vote and moving control of elections from non-partisan election officials to the legislature itself. Some states are actually moving to allow the legislature to overthrow the results of an election

When your side wins the election of legitimate; when your side loses the electi.on was fraudulent.  Sounds like Belarus.

Not since the re-election of George W. Bush have Republicans won the popular vote.  Obama won hands down.  Hillary won the vote by3+ million yet lost the Electoral College. Biden won by over 7 million votes, all of which indicates that Republicans have become a distinct minority.

So why are Presidential elections such nail bitters?

The Electoral College clearly needs reforming.  A vote in Kansas or Wyoming carries a hell of a lot more weight than a vote in California or New York.

Look at it this way:  Hillary could have won EVERY VOTE in the states she carried yet Donald Trump winning the states he carried by a single vote would still have given him victory in the E. C.  Hillary would have won the vote by more than ten million and still lost.  That is not democracy.

Electoral College votes should be apportioned by the percentage of each candidate rather than winner take all.  Currently only Maine and Nebraska apportion their E. C. voter.

Voting rights have come under attack everywhere based on the big lie.    I ask why states have the right to dictate who votes and how.  If any issue is national issue rather than a state issue it is voting rights.

This nonsense that state’s rights include voting rights rest on the fallacy that our states are really “states” akin to Slovenia or the Czech Republic.  They are not.  The right and manner of voting is clearly a national issue no matter in which state the citizen lives.

Four times this year Senate Republicans have refused even to hold a vote on the issue highlighting the need to reform the filibuster and Senate rules.  Why would Republicans do this?  Simply to hold power through obstruction.

The big lie has spread in the last year.  It has spread because of right wing media, Fox News and authoritarian Republicans in federal and states houses who continue to repeat it.  Democrats have become the “other” – Leninists, communists, libtards.  Losing to “them” is simply unacceptable – even at the cost of overthrowing democracy.  Most have come to the realization that they can no longer win fairly so they opt to hold on to power by any means, including threats and violence.

A year ago I watched as confederate flags flew at the capitol, something never seen in our history.  I saw an insurrectionist beating a cop with a pole upon which flew an American flag.  I saw traitors in Congress vote to overthrow an election result because they didn’t like the outcome and wanted to maintain power.  And I saw a Mussolini wannabe encourage it all.

About toritto

I was born during year four of the reign of Emperor Tiberius Claudius on the outskirts of the empire in Brooklyn. I married my high school sweetheart, the girl I took to the prom and we were together for forty years until her passing in 2004. We had four kids together and buried two together. I had a successful career in Corporate America (never got rich but made a living) and traveled the world. I am currently retired in the Tampa Bay metro area and live alone. One of my daughters is close by and one within a morning’s drive. They call their pops everyday. I try to write poetry (not very well), and about family. Occasionally I will try a historical piece relating to politics. :-)

  1. I live in Georgia, and my daughter and her family live in Marjorie Taylor Greene’s district. I’m pretty sure my neighbors are QAnon folks. I see Confederate flags every day. It’s crazy here and often scary. There’s a powerful religious component to what these people believe, and I think that makes it doubly dangerous.

Whatever the outcome of the next election, the divide in America appears to be too wide to ever heal now. I can only see that becoming worse in years to come, sad to say.
    Best wishes, Pete.
