How Could They Not Know?

“If there’s a significant deterioration in security, I don’t think its going tohappen from a Friday to a Monday.” – Secretary of State Blinken – July 7

Blinken played Nostradamus on 7/7 and President Biden doubled down July 8 saying the likelihood of the Taliban overrunning the country and ruling everything was “highly unlikely.”

Down to their own stunningly (perfectly?) inaccurate predictions of what would take place once our military forces left the country,  government officials could not have scripted a worse ending to the twenty-year disaster that has been our occupation of Afghanistan.

Every image coming out of Afghanistan this past weekend was an advertisement for the incompetence, arrogance, and double-dealing nature of American foreign policy leaders. Scenes of military dogs being evacuated while our troops fire weapons in the air to disperse humans desperate for a seat out of the country were stunning to behold.

“News that the military was forced to re-deploy troops to Afghanistan in order to ensure an “orderly and safe” withdrawal is being met with justifiable eye-rolling worldwide. It’s a little late for that.”

The pattern is always the same.   We go to places where we are  not welcome telling our people a complex political problem can be solved militarily. We lie about our motives and occupy the country.  We pick a local civilian government which turns out to be corrupt and repressive increasing local antagonism

In response we ramp up our financial, political and military commitment to “the mission.”   Our government begins talking of “progress.” Just a little more time; a few more troops; another billion dollars.

Throughout, we make false assurances of security that are believed by significant numbers of local civilians, guaranteeing they will later either become refugees or targets for retribution as collaborators. This all goes on for so long that the lies become institutionalized, believed not only by press contracted to deliver the propaganda but also by the bureaucrats.

“Even deep inside the machine of American power, where everyone paying even a modicum of attention over the last twenty years should have known Kabul would fall in a heartbeat, they still believe their own legends. Which means this will happen again, and probably sooner rather than later.”

Just last Thursday intelligence officials stated that Kabul could fall within 90 days. It fell in 90 hours.  What  difference would it have made if we had laid them all off?

How could our government not know?

I knew.  And I wrote about it here years ago. The moment we left the President of Afghanistan, who ever he was, would be a dead man.

I was right.  He fled the country on Sunday as his “army” melted away.

Do you think this would have gone on for 20 years if we were conscripting kids off the street, putting them through training and dropping them in Kabul to fight in a civil war? I think not.

If you think we should have stayed and fought until “mission accomplished” then send your own kid.   Of course you won’t.  You’re for fighting on so long as its someone else’s kid.

About toritto

I was born during year four of the reign of Emperor Tiberius Claudius on the outskirts of the empire in Brooklyn. I married my high school sweetheart, the girl I took to the prom and we were together for forty years until her passing in 2004. We had four kids together and buried two together. I had a successful career in Corporate America (never got rich but made a living) and traveled the world. I am currently retired in the Tampa Bay metro area and live alone. One of my daughters is close by and one within a morning’s drive. They call their pops everyday. I try to write poetry (not very well), and about family. Occasionally I will try a historical piece relating to politics. :-)

You predicted it, and then a couple of weeks ago I said to my wife that Kabul would be under Taliban rule by the weekend of the 14th/15th. Perhaps we should be in charge, instead of Biden and Blinken?
You nailed it as usual, Frank.
    Best wishes, Pete.
