Can Do

Staring at the pile of bills
doesn’t make ’em any smaller
shuffling the envelopes
doesn’t get the mortgage paid.
Out o’ work a whole year now
running out of unemployment
must apply for food stamps soon
get the kids on Medicaid.

Gone through  all our meager savings
raided our retirement
nothing left for son’s tuition
siren call of Army Strong.

Had to sell my one good auto
driving the old clunker now
down to basic tv cable
house worth less than what I owe.
Humped since graduation day
busted my ass royally

Treated like a one night stand
gone with out a morning kiss.

Taught to play by all the rules
now those dreams are just mirages
while the politicians say
“Got to cut those benefits
gettin’ checks will make you shiftless
sap your “can do” attitude!”

About toritto

I was born during year four of the reign of Emperor Tiberius Claudius on the outskirts of the empire in Brooklyn. I married my high school sweetheart, the girl I took to the prom and we were together for forty years until her passing in 2004. We had four kids together and buried two together. I had a successful career in Corporate America (never got rich but made a living) and traveled the world. I am currently retired in the Tampa Bay metro area and live alone. One of my daughters is close by and one within a morning’s drive. They call their pops everyday. I try to write poetry (not very well), and about family. Occasionally I will try a historical piece relating to politics. :-)

Just a wee bit of Schadenfreude, Pete? It is bad enough to have to endure this Fascist-Capitalist era without having to be reminded of our plight.

  3. It’s ok for the Republicans to cut corporate taxes by trillions ( they couldn’t wait to do that) but helping American citizens who pay their salaries with taxes deducted from their paltry paycheck is out of the question. Our democracy is in big trouble. These immoral men and women ( white supremest) still call Trump ( a traitor) their president.
