Toritto – 1968

JoAnn – My bride of five years

.

And our first new car purchased when I left the Army.  A 1968 Saab – 3 cylinders, 2-cycle, free wheeling front wheel drive, 4 speed on the column.  We couldn’t afford a VW bug!

JoAnn and I were two city kids growing up.  Our parents didn’t take vacations to far away places.  The first time I left New York / New Jersey was when the military sent me to Eritrea.  I came back more a man of the world after spending time in Lisbon, Madrid, Rome, Athens, Cairo, Asmara, Beirut, and the Azores.

We were still young (I was 26, she 23) so we began to travel a bit.  Not far from New York where we owned our first home, but far enough to experience new things.

In 1967 we drove to Montreal in my old Plymouth Valiant and spent a week at EXPO 67, the Montreal world’s fair.  She loved the rural atmosphere of upstate New York, so much different from the city.  And I got to use my college French in Montreal.

So each year until the children came we would spend time in rural Vermont, the Vermont of 50 years ago now.  It was a yearly trip we looked forward to – kind of like the honeymoon we never had.  Always in October – always in the Fall.

About toritto

I was born during year four of the reign of Emperor Tiberius Claudius on the outskirts of the empire in Brooklyn. I married my high school sweetheart, the girl I took to the prom and we were together for forty years until her passing in 2004. We had four kids together and buried two together. I had a successful career in Corporate America (never got rich but made a living) and traveled the world. I am currently retired in the Tampa Bay metro area and live alone. One of my daughters is close by and one within a morning’s drive. They call their pops everyday. I try to write poetry (not very well), and about family. Occasionally I will try a historical piece relating to politics. :-)

I loved that model of Saab. They were famous winners of Car Rallies.
Jo-Ann’s hair looked great too. So 1960s. Halcyon days indeed, Frank.
    Best wishes, Pete.

Delightful post, Frank. I love the photos! Vermont still has many beautiful remote areas. I hope it stays that way.
