The Old Man’s Take On Sensible Gun Laws

“Leave it to Donald Trump to parrot the most demented proposal out
there to try to finally respond, even in some small way, to the
epidemic of gun massacres in America. We all know the problem is too
many guns. And the answer is supposed to be more and more guns out

Yeah, sure, turn all our teachers, who are mostly women in case
anyone didn’t know, into lethal commandos. Not just in high
schools and grade schools and kindergartens, but Sunday schools too.
Trump says it’s called “concealed carry.” No; what it’s called is
dumb and dumber.

Trump made a big public show of directing Jeff Sessions to consider
regulating bump stocks. Does he not know the ATF has already
determined they have no power to promulgate any such regulation
without Congress passing a new law? Apparently not.

But it isn’t just his embarrassing ignorance. The insincerity of
Donald Trump is so abysmal he came to the meeting with survivors
armed with crib notes (captured by a photographer) to
remind him to respond with “I hear you.” Who needs such a reminder
except a terminally insensitive?

Yesterday the CEO of the NRA spoke at CPAC and told the conservative crowd to “be afraid” – the socialists were coming!  In his view everyone to the left of Mussolini is a socialist.

What we have in America is a boat with 3 huge holes in it.

Let’s break it down. In principle it’s real simple to understand and
to fix. But you can’t just plug one hole, or even worse just
partially or temporarily fix one hole, and expect the boat not to
keep sinking.

The gun show – No questions asked

1) The Background Check Sieve

When you hear talk about fixing the background check system, most of
the time it does not even consider gun shows or online sales. The
back burner bill languishing in Congress right now, the Fix NICS bill
being touted by some, would do nothing but provide additional funds
to enforcing EXISTING and inadequate provisions, it would not cover
these massive gaps. As long as anyone, even a mentally ill person,
can walk into a gun show and buy anything they want no questions
asked, nothing has been fixed.

2) Patchwork Gun Registration

Even if we had a truly robust background check system, it would not
keep guns out of the hands of lunatics if private parties, outside of
the background check system, were spreading them around. It MUST be
illegal, nationwide, to transfer a gun without licensing. For those
irrationally paranoid about jackbooted federal thugs, we are
prefectly happy with state registration systems. They work perfectly
fine for cars, but they must be universal, just like car registrations.

3) Obscene, Murderous Firepower

Do we allow civilians to have flame throwers, bazookas, or an Abrams
tank for so-called self-protection? No, we do not. Because these are
weapons of war, and we don’t want our streets and classrooms to be
war zones. Assault rifles, even so-called semi-automatic ones, gonzo
magazines, bump stocks, these are all totally unacceptable in private
hands in a civil society. Ban them all.

There was a time in America when a foreign army might come marching
up your street at any moment, when you might need a guy on a horse
riding at midnight to warn you they were coming, when you might need
a “well-regulated militia” to respond to an actual armed invasion. If
you want to get your hands on weapons of war in these modern times,
join a real militia, which in today’s America would be the Army, the
Navy, the Air Force or the Marines.

There is a reason why the Constitution also prohibits quartering of
soldier in private homes. We don’t want our armed forces turned on
our own citizens. But what we have today is even worse, militias of
one, mowing down our own peaceful citizens in bulk.

Each and every one of these three huge holes must be permanently
patched, with laws not allowed to lapse ever again. Otherwise the
massacres will just continue. The NRA knows this perfectly well, and
they will fight tooth and nail to keep their gun sales booming, which
is ALL they care about.

The NRA talks about hardening schools, because of the threat THEY
have created by deliberately handing out assault weapons like candy
to sickos. Where is this going, having every citizen having a gun
pointed at every other citizen at all times? The only thing the NRA
is interested in hardening are hearts, their own already being

Any member of Congress, any member of state legislature, any other
elected official, who will not immediately stand up and stand strong
for each and very one of these fixes should be voted out  of office .

The right not to be mass murdered is inalienable. The right to play
with assault weapons like they’re sex toys is not.

We keep hearing “Guns don’t kill people.  People kill people.”  Well people with guns kill more than people without guns.  Lots more.”

The NRA is the stooge of the gun manufacturing industry; it does not exist to keep you “free.”  It exists to promote the sale of more guns.  It is currently estimated that civilians in the United States hold 270 – 310 million guns both legal and illicit.  The military holds 3 million and the police hold 1,150,000 weapons.

Does anyone feel safe?  What we don’t need is more damn guns.

But hey, what do I know?  I’m just an old crank living in Florida.  I have never owned a gun.  My parents never owned a gun.  My children and their families do not own a gun.

When I was honorably discharged from the Army on November 17, 1967 I turned in my weapon.  I haven’t touched a fire arm since.  I am not an ammo-sexual.

I don’t need an AR – 15 to feel like a man or a patriot.

Today there has been a corporate movement to sever ties with the NRA.  It was begun yesterday by the nation’s largest privately owned bank – The First National Bank of Omaha which has issued an NRA Visa credit card in the past.  It has decided it won’t do it anymore.  I am proud to say I carry their generic credit card.

Don’t hold your breath on any of this.  I will be dead and buried before real change comes through Congress.  And so will you.  Money talks.  Bullshit walks.

We should change the names of AR-15s to “Marco Rubio” because they are so easy to buy.

About toritto

I was born during year four of the reign of Emperor Tiberius Claudius on the outskirts of the empire in Brooklyn. I married my high school sweetheart, the girl I took to the prom and we were together for forty years until her passing in 2004. We had four kids together and buried two together. I had a successful career in Corporate America (never got rich but made a living) and traveled the world. I am currently retired in the Tampa Bay metro area and live alone. One of my daughters is close by and one within a morning’s drive. They call their pops everyday. I try to write poetry (not very well), and about family. Occasionally I will try a historical piece relating to politics. :-)

Subtle you are not and for that your readership is thankful! Say on, say on! I just hope we are done with His Trumpian Ignorance before either of us is beneath the sod. There are hardly sufficient adjectives to describe #45 and certainly insufficient adverbs to modify his actions! Thanks again for your voice!

I think that ‘arming the teachers’ is the craziest thing (bar none) I have ever heard any politician say.
He might just as well have said ‘let’s get more guns into schools, to give the shooters more options’.
I only have one conclusion about America, Frank, and it’s pure and simple.
‘It has lost its way’. Gun ownership is more important than the lives of children.
That is one shameful legacy to pass down to history.
    Best wishes, Pete

OOPs, hit enter prematurely — Like the ancient Hebrews, we are ready to lay down our harps by the willows as we can no longer sing in this strange land.

I have never seen a handgun in England outside a museum and except for drug gangs, lunchtime is virtually unheard of.

Sorry, the autocorrect has got the better of me here. Much as I look forward to lunchtime, that isn’t what I originally wrote. The problem is that nothing obvious springs to mind. I meant to say “gun violence” but I can’t think of a synonym for that that you could easily mistake for “lunchtime”!!

Hold on Toritto, I’m not getting you let out with this…….because I like when you write poetry and now I’m about to say something about politics but I won’t, unless you have a sense of humour but I see that you take it very seriously, actually like my dad, so I just…..forgot.
Hold on what is up with these people? I do’t understand

So Charlie…..can you buy an AR-15 at a gun show in Madrid or Barcelona no questions ask… no license required? If not, do you still feel free?

    Best from Florida.
