Once when I stood in a line
I was younger than everyone;
Younger than ball players
Younger than cops
Younger than soldiers
Younger than the check-out lady
at the grocery store.
Everyone was older than me;
I wanted to be older too.
Then came the season
when everyone was just like me;
the check-out woman at the store.
Time is relative Einstein said;
The time was mine
but I didn’t notice the simple joys
of Spring and Summer.
It’s only now I notice
having moved to the front of the line
that everyone I see
is younger than me.
The check-out girl at the grocery store.
Do you think they notice
the simple joys
“May I help you with your groceries sir?”
