Of the New Colossus and Hollow Words – a Timely Re-Post

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
with conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
a mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles.  From her beacon-hand
glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
the air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
with silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
uour huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
the wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

Emma Lazarus

Shame on us.  Home of the brave my ass.  We have become afraid of our own shadows.

About toritto

I was born during year four of the reign of Emperor Tiberius Claudius on the outskirts of the empire in Brooklyn. I married my high school sweetheart, the girl I took to the prom and we were together for forty years until her passing in 2004. We had four kids together and buried two together. I had a successful career in Corporate America (never got rich but made a living) and traveled the world. I am currently retired in the Tampa Bay metro area and live alone. One of my daughters is close by and one within a morning’s drive. They call their pops everyday. I try to write poetry (not very well), and about family. Occasionally I will try a historical piece relating to politics. :-)

A very timely reminder. We in Australia must be very careful we don’t throw stones in our own glasshouse.

  4. A couple of corrections. If you can be bothered, Frank, delete the other one.

    The New Colossus Mourns
Just like some brazen monster in an ancient myth
our president spreads his lies from sea to sea,
and though I stand like some ancient monolith
    my people have forgotten Liberty.
I was famed once as the refuge of the oppressed,
the Mother of Exiles who welcomed one and all
back when my people were the bravest and the best,
before they became frightened, foolish, weak and small.
The shame of golden toilets and storied pomp, cries she!
They’ve gone and closed their minds, our Golden Door.
They’ll keep those huddled masses far beyond the sea,
betraying our past, we’ll welcome them no more.
So extinguish my flame, with that promise to be free,
and make me a chic hotel to mock the poor.
