“Grab Them By The Pussy”

Well it has come to this.

The Republican Party, the party of Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan has nominated for President of the United States a dissolute pig.

I don’t know where to begin examining the moral and political significance of Donald Trump’s recorded comments about women released this past week; what parts he likes and what parts he believes he can grab at will because of his star power.

First — and this is in no way to diminish the offensiveness of Trump’s remarks — let’s guard against being terribly shocked, shocked, that there is sexist, and sexual, commentary going on in private, or what fools like Trump think is private even when they are wearing the microphone.

Boys are boys; some of us even when we are grown men.  I know how males talk when we don’t think the girls are listening.  And I have no doubt in my mind that the Donald is correct when he says “Bill Clinton has said worse things on the golf course.”

Most of us eventually grow up.

At the same time, Trump’s comments are remarkable for their grossness, particularly for the way they fuse sexual availability and celebrity entitlement. He is interested not only in commenting on women’s attributes, but in how his power allows him to conduct himself.

“Just kiss.  Don’t wait!   When you’re a star you can do anything.  Grab them by the pussy.”

I cannot believe I typed this sentence about a candidate for president of the United States, or that you can  read it, even in redacted form, in The Washington Post.

This is not merely demeaning women by objectifying them; it is demeaning women by reveling in being able to control and dominate them, or at least preening and pretending that he can. There is a major difference between assessing whether a flat-chested woman can be a ten, (from another Trump quote) and talking in terms of unwanted touching, if not outright sexual assault.

The Donald gave the usual “I’m sorry if I offended” but such phrasing is entirely inadequate for the language at issue.  Is there someone who would not find these comments offensive?  Does he even have a clue that such language is beyond the pale?  Did he ever realize that expressing such comments publicly not three weeks after his marriage to Melania said as much about her as it said about him?

This was Trump being Trump.

“There is nobody who has more respect for women than I do!”

Right.

To know how some men talk behind closed doors is one thing; to hear it from a Presidential nominee on tape as he prepares for an appearance on a Hollywood gossip show is quite another.   Trump once said he could shoot someone in the middle of 5th Avenue and not lose any votes.

We will see.  Many Republicans were demanding that he be dropped from the ticket.  Too late.  Donald Trump has made Mike Pence look like Winston Churchill.

Meanwhile I received my election ballot in the mail yesterday.  Early voting has started here in Florida.  The saddest part is that I am faced with the worst choices in my lifetime – and that’s going back awhile.

The Dems are lucky that the Repubs nominated the worst possible candidate they could find.  There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Mitt Romney, had he simply been re-nominated, would have buried Hillary Clinton, so disliked is she. Just about any main stream Republican could have beaten her or made it a stay up all night race on election day.

Oh well.  So what’s an old leftie to do?

“Nader-voters who spurned Democrat Al Gore to vote for Nader ended up swinging both Florida and New Hampshire to Bush in 2000. Charlie Cook, the editor of the Cook Political Report and political analyst for National Journal, called “Florida and New Hampshire simply “the two states that Mr. Nader handed to the Bush-Cheney ticket,” when Cook was writing about “The Next Nader Effect,” in The New York Times on 9 March 2004.

Cook said, “Mr. Nader, running as the Green Party nominee, cost Al Gore two states, Florida and New Hampshire, either of which would have given the vice president [Gore] a victory in 2000. In Florida, which George W. Bush carried by 537 votes, Mr. Nader received nearly 100,000 votes [nearly 200 times the size of Bush’s Florida ‘win’]. In New Hampshire, which Mr. Bush won by 7,211 votes, Mr. Nader pulled in more than 22,000 [three times the size of Bush’s ‘win’ in that state].”

If either of those two states had gone instead to Gore, then Bush would have lost the 2000 election; we would never have had a U.S. President George W. Bush, and so Nader managed to turn not just one but two key toss-up states for candidate Bush, and to become the indispensable person making G.W. Bush the President of the United States — even more indispensable, and more important to Bush’s “electoral success,” than were such huge Bush financial contributors as Enron Corporation’s chief Ken Lay.”

Hillary Clinton is facing a proto-fascist narcissist demagogue IMHO.  Trump is not simply incompetent to govern; he is dangerous.  I am a German in the 1920s torn between a government I don’t like (Weimar) and a bit of a buffoon who claims to have all the answers -Adolph Hitler.

I will take a deep breath, hold my nose, hope for the best  and vote for Hillary.

P.S. – Late this afternoon John McCain finally had enough and officially unendorsed his party’s nominee in a scathing announcement.

About toritto

I was born during year four of the reign of Emperor Tiberius Claudius on the outskirts of the empire in Brooklyn. I married my high school sweetheart, the girl I took to the prom and we were together for forty years until her passing in 2004. We had four kids together and buried two together. I had a successful career in Corporate America (never got rich but made a living) and traveled the world. I am currently retired in the Tampa Bay metro area and live alone. One of my daughters is close by and one within a morning’s drive. They call their pops everyday. I try to write poetry (not very well), and about family. Occasionally I will try a historical piece relating to politics. :-)

Let’s look on the bright side. Now the bigots and racists and church burners, the KKK and the neo-nazis have come out into the open and the honest decent Americans who had been turning a blind eye can see them for what they are.
