Well the Democratic National Convention was gaveled to order yesterday amid chaos and raucous demonstrations by supporters of Senator Bernie Sanders.
Over the weekend Julian Assange got his revenge as Wikileaks released some 20,000 emails hacked from the Democratic National Committee indicating that the DNC, which is supposed to be neutral during primary elections between contesting candidates, clearly favored and worked for the nomination of Hillary Clinton.
The Chairwoman of the DNC was none other than our Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Schulz. Tsk tsk.
Sanders supporters have been complaining for months that Wasserman-Schultz was a Clinton water carrier, was secretly supporting the Clinton campaign and should resign. Our Debbie got caught up in the storm after Assange released the e-mails and agreed to step down after the Convention.
So Sunday morning she walks into a breakfast hosted by the Florida delegation. “I’m so glad to be here” among my peeps. Heehee. Little Debbie was roundly jeered off of the stage, the catcalls following her into the halls of the hotel. Rowdie lefties.
Wasserman-Schulz was supposed to gavel the convention to order and run the show from the opening to the closing bell. Not to be.
The Clinton camp was clearly worried. After all, 46% of the delegates in the hall were Sanders delegates – not enough to make him the nominee but more than enough to make a lot of noise in front of national television cameras. What to do; what to do.
Debbie had to resign the Chair of the DNC effective immediately and agree to take no part in the convention. Not to worry. Wasserman-Schultz got a high post in the campaign and will undoubtedly be rewarded for falling on her sword if Clinton is elected.
Turns out many of the hacked e-mails were despicable. Sanders is of Jewish heritage (he has said so in the past) but never speaks of religion nor has he been observed practicing. Is Bernie an atheist? Let’s paint him as one! “It will mean a lot to my peeps! (in the south) Baptists will vote for a pious Jew but never vote for an atheist!”
It is being reported that the Russians hacked the DNC e-mails and released them to Assange in order to boost the candidacy of Donald Trump. Putin and Trump are having a bro-mance with Donald “admiring strong leaders” with an authoritarian bent and Vlad agreeing that the U.S. has no real stake in defending NATO’s Eastern European members. So the argument goes that Vlad is for Donald and released the e-mails to Julian who released them to the world in order to create chaos for Hillary Clinton.
Note that no one in the DNC DENIED sending the e-mails. In fact, the new Clinton loyalist and water carrier Donna Brazil temporarily chairing the DNC apologized to the Sanders campaign yesterday. And Julian Assange stated this morning that there is absolutely no proof that he got the emails from the Russians (though he probably did IMHO).
So from the opening gavel yesterday the Sanders supporters in the hall were ready to voice their displeasure as were those outside. In full throat came the boos whenever Hillary’s name was mentioned. They feel with some legitimacy that the election was rigged.
Will the Sanders lefties come around, stay home or vote for the Greens? Who knows. The convention is basically trying to send the message that (a) you fought the good fight (b) your efforts have resulted in the most progressive platform ever approved by the Democratic Party (c) we must united to defeat Trump because if he wins (d) he man have a GOP House and Senate majority and the next President will probably appoint two if not three Supreme Court Justices.
In all fairness the platform is the most progressive; the problem is that the majority of Americans don’t trust Hillary Clinton and believe she will talk the talk, get the nomination and forget all about the platform. They are usually written to be forgotten anyway. Sanders supporters point out she originally favored the TPP trade agreement as the “gold standard” of trade agreements and now, faced with a strong challenge from her left is now against it. Her V.P choice similarly changed his position.
Besides, she is a war hawk who never met a war she didn’t like.
The left is basically saying she will do or say anything to get elected and will then forget all about it. She will pander to the left now and say all the right things – but too many don’t trust her.
On the other hand, if the left stays home, she will lose.
Bernie took the stage last night after speaking to his supporters outside of the convention hall urging them to support Clinton lest Trump be elected. Outside he was heckled. During his prime time address a number of his delegates indicated they would never support Clinton.
He pointed to the platform and the agreement to reduce the number of unelected “super delegates” by two thirds at the next convention. Universal health care. Affordable college tuition. Criminal justice reform. Environmental justice. Opposing TPP. Rebuilding our infra-structure. He said the movement must go on but right now the best chance to do that was by electing Clinton. Some of his younger, more naïve supporters were crying.
The left has something to learn from the Tea Party. If you want to take control of a party and have your candidate win the nomination you have to continue the work. When Gerald Ford was nominated by the GOP, Ronald Reagan was the defeated candidate. He told his supporters not to give up; to continue the struggle.
Revolutionary change doesn’t happen overnight.
