Plain Girl

depressed sad self harm cutting scars razor razor blade

A plain girl dressed by Walmart
holds her books against her breasts
looking down at the floor through unfashionable glasses
while walking down the hall to English lit.

No one sees her running the gauntlet
‘cept of course the mean girls, laughing among themselves
‘bout how she’s really only good for a quick suck
which ain’t sex anyway.

She will eat her lunch alone, return to a silent apartment
fix dinner for her cashier mom, go to the bathroom,
slit her torso with a razor shedding the blood of a lamb
in a two inch bright red line.

She will smile all the while
through the exquisite pain
soothed by the flow
of blood sacrifice.

And when she graduates and no one ‘cept her mother
will think to send her a card or deign to sign her yearbook
the shedding of her blood in the two inch bright red line
reassures her she is still alive.

About toritto

I was born during year four of the reign of Emperor Tiberius Claudius on the outskirts of the empire in Brooklyn. I married my high school sweetheart, the girl I took to the prom and we were together for forty years until her passing in 2004. We had four kids together and buried two together. I had a successful career in Corporate America (never got rich but made a living) and traveled the world. I am currently retired in the Tampa Bay metro area and live alone. One of my daughters is close by and one within a morning’s drive. They call their pops everyday. I try to write poetry (not very well), and about family. Occasionally I will try a historical piece relating to politics. :-)

The subject of self-harm gets so little coverage, yet is a huge issue where young people are concerned. Your poem should be adopted by an appropriate charity or helpline, Frank. It makes it so much easier for others to understand their pain.
    Best wishes, Pete.

So sad and so little done about this increasingly worrying trend..well done for highlighting this issue..it seems to me though that we should be addressing the cause by bringing our children up to be kinder to others and maybe only then will this decrease 🙂

Indeed Blondie. Unfortunately I don’t see that happening anytime soon. Too many of the young I see are narcissistic morons with an immense sense of entitlement who spend their lives looking at their precious phones and can’t write two coherent paragraphs.

Ignore me – I’m just an old crank. 🙂

Me Too..but someone has to take responsibility and intil they do that’s what will happen to our young and any changes need to start from the bottom up and that’s me being an old crank 🙂

  5. I came over from A Curious Mind, too. Very moving and excellent use of specific details like dressed from walmart and cashier mom. So much information is conveyed in a few stark words. I agree with the others, this is a subject that needs attention. So many people are in pain.
