The Other September 11

Salvador Allende
26 June 1908 – 11 September 1973

The disappeared thousands
cry out from hidden graves
on the other nine eleven
we have willfully forgotten

remembering only our own
in white vestments with clean hands;
no prayers for the tortured
no confession of our sin
no quest for absolution.

For Jara and the others
let us recall our guilt
for on the day I lost my faith
we lost our way
over the bones of Salvador Allende.

About toritto

I was born during year four of the reign of Emperor Tiberius Claudius on the outskirts of the empire in Brooklyn. I married my high school sweetheart, the girl I took to the prom and we were together for forty years until her passing in 2004. We had four kids together and buried two together. I had a successful career in Corporate America (never got rich but made a living) and traveled the world. I am currently retired in the Tampa Bay metro area and live alone. One of my daughters is close by and one within a morning’s drive. They call their pops everyday. I try to write poetry (not very well), and about family. Occasionally I will try a historical piece relating to politics. :-)

    The Chilean Army Officer who killed the poet, song writer, theater director Victor Jara in the soccer stadium and dumped his body into the street has been living quietly here in Florida for decades. He was finally ordered to stand trial for Jara’s torture and murder on April 15, 2015.

      Was there a result to the trial?

      I remember the Holly Near song, “The junta took the fingers from Victor Jara’s hands. They said to the gentle poet, “play your guitar now if you can”–So Victor started singing, till they shot his body down. You can kill a man but not a song, when its’s sung the whole world round.

        Roger – The trial has not yet occurred – charges were filed and there was an attempt at dismissal. A judge ordered that the charges stand and a trial take place. Regards

  2. So what’s your view – did Allende kill himself or was he shot?
