“If Voting Changed Anything, They’d Make It Illegal!”

So said Emma Goldman, the anarchist, who considered it to be an honor to be the first political agitator to be deported from the United States.

Yesterday we had another election. Do you think it mattered? Do you think anything will change?

My gerrymandered U.S. House District here in Florida is so red the Republican representative ran unopposed. Yup. Unopposed. I sometimes feel this district would elect Hermann Goering as its Representative.

The red tide went on to sweep into a Senate majority. Quite a night for the right.

Mitch is all set to be majority leader; last night in his victory speech he was as sweet as honey on the vine.

Remember when the Republicans were in the minority? Remember their tactics?

Obstructionist as all get-out; filibuster everything and everyone. Bring the Senate to a grinding halt. Exalt in the fight.

So what can we look forward to in the next two years?

I’m sure we will see another 50 votes in the House to kill Obamacare. Will some Democrat filibuster the bill when it gets to the Senate? Will the Dems now adopt the slash and burn tactics? The GOP does not have enough votes to win a cloture vote by themselves; they need some Democratic votes just as the Dems did when they were in the majority and couldn’t get anything done.

On the other hand I’m sure there are some Dem Senators out there who “want to work across the aisle to get things done for America”. I can smell the sell-out by the corporatists from here. Mitch on the other hand will have his hands full keeping his own crazies in line.

Most likely however between the gerrymandered House and the grid-locked Senate, tied up in the bondage of it’s own archaic rules, nothing will get done. The next two years will probably be spent blocking the GOP agenda as best they can in the Senate and via Presidential veto.

Will the GOP use the “nuclear option” to break filibusters? We’ll see; they are more ballsy then Dems.

We re-elected our Governor who should be in Federal prison for Medicare fraud. The other choice for Governor was a “Democrat” who not too long ago was our Republican Governor. Oh, and we had a Libertarian on the ballot who got 4% of the vote. Some choices.

We also voted “for” medical marijuana by 58% for and 42% against. Yup. But it lost. It would require a Florida Constitutional Amendment – and that takes 60%. We only had 58%,  How convenient. The sheriff of Polk County warned we would have pot shops on every corner – kind of like beer and liquor stores I guess.  Yeegads.   Pot shops.

So much for progressive politics. Thank God the e-mails, the ads, the phone calls and never ending requests for money to fight the Koch brothers have stopped.

Emma G. Once said “If voting changed anything they’d make it illegal!”.

After J. Edgar Hoover had her deported from the United States to the Soviet Union, Emma became a first class pain in the ass to Lenin opposing the “dictatorship of the proletariat” as just another dictatorship. In their first meeting when she arrived in Moscow she asked “Why are anarchists in jail?” Lenin replied that “they aren’t philosophers; they are criminals!”

Goldman left the Soviet Union after the crushing of the revolt of the Kronstadt sailors by the red army led by Trotsky. Emma knw the revolution was lost.

“ Bourgeois dictatorship is replaced by the “dictatorship of the proletariat”—or by that of its “advance guard,” the Communist Party. Lenin takes the seat of the Romanovs, the Imperial Cabinet is rechristened Soviet of People’s Commissars, Trotsky is appointed Minister of War, and a laborer becomes the Military Governor General of Moscow. That is, in essence, the Bolshevik conception of revolution, as translated into actual practice.”

“The STATE IDEA, the authoritarian principle, has been proven bankrupt by the experience of the Russian Revolution.”

Yesterday’s elections changed nothing; it merely shuffled the cards.

Bring on the Presidential candidates!! Our Electoral College and the corporate media will make sure that no one or group outside of the established two parties will have a voice. Tweddle-dum; tweedle-dee. Hillary. And you really think we’re free?

About toritto

I was born during year four of the reign of Emperor Tiberius Claudius on the outskirts of the empire in Brooklyn. I married my high school sweetheart, the girl I took to the prom and we were together for forty years until her passing in 2004. We had four kids together and buried two together. I had a successful career in Corporate America (never got rich but made a living) and traveled the world. I am currently retired in the Tampa Bay metro area and live alone. One of my daughters is close by and one within a morning’s drive. They call their pops everyday. I try to write poetry (not very well), and about family. Occasionally I will try a historical piece relating to politics. :-)

  1. It wouldn’t bother me a bit to see Obamacare go down in flames. It’s been an absolute disaster for doctors and low and middle income people who actually get sick and find out how little their government sponsored health insurance covers.
