Demonstrations like they used to be
As a genuine card carrying member of the Old Left I get lots of emails.
Mostly asking for money to support some Congressional or Senatorial candidate in some far away state because the sun will not rise over the Republic the day after the mid-term elections if the G.O.P. takes control of the Senate by winning in Kansas, Wyoming or wherever.
Few if any of the “progressive” candidates I am asked to support with my retirement dollars are very “progressive” IMHO. They are Democrats – which is supposed to make them appeal to my better angels.
Now I have never been fond of the “new left”. I always felt there was something missing from the agenda. It took me a while to figure it out. You must forgive me but occasionally I can be dense.
I watched the Yippies, the hippies, free love, Summer of love, LSD, Hair up close and personal. There was only one thing missing.
None of the hippie, Yippie, free love, anti-war crowd gave a rat’s ass about workers – which is probably why so many of the workers voted for Richard Nixon. They didn’t care about workers because they were in college and probably never worked. Tricky Dick did away with conscription and the crowds of demonstrators faded away. If we still had conscription and were taking your kid off of the streets and dropping him in Kandahar do you think we would be in our 13th year of war?
Along came St. Ronnie on his horse who began dismantling unions – and he did so without a peep.
Where is today’s “left”? And don’t tell me Hillary Clinton. I’m still waiting to know where she stands on anything.
Where are the candidates speaking out for higher taxes on the wealthy, for closing the gap between the 1% and the rest of us? In support of a living wage for all who work full time? In support of a true national health care system or Medicare for all? In support of free higher education rather than student loans which the banks made sure you can’t escape even if you die?
While they pay quiet lip service no Democrat runs openly on these planks – only socialists – and the structure of our two party system ensures that no one outside the two party system has a prayer of winning.
The left today is in a state of distraction, seemingly obsessed with issues which should not be it’s priority if it wants to win.
How much MSM coverage have we seen about Ray Rice? About abortion and contraception? About gay marriage? About “Yes means Yes”?
Women outnumber men in every state in the Union save Alaska yet candidates loudly supporting these issues are not a lock for election. Social issues, while important, are distractions from the real economic hardships that modern capitalism has wrought – issues on which few if any candidates run.
Yeah I know – it’s “class warfare”.
Do you think the one percent give a crap about gay marriage? The issue serves their purpose, splitting the voters and distracting us from the issues which affect the vast majority – like buying members of Congress with lots of campaign donations.
Ray Rice? Yeah we all saw it. I think it was despicable. She, however did not file a charge against him. She married him. She practically told everyone else to mind their own business.
What can the law do in a case like this? Nothing. She didn’t file a charge; she won’t cooperate with prosecutors; she won’t testify. We immediately got MSM telling us for days why women “won’t leave”. In more cases than we want to admit, the reasons are economic.
Meanwhile we went to war again against another “terror” group – one of which popped up on the radar “even more dangerous that the Islamic State”. Just in time to be used as an excuse not to have to ask Congress for permission to bomb Syria. Where was the “Left”? They went home with everyone else.
Today I got an email from a “progressive” group:
“Tell the Senate: Stand up for victims of domestic violence by revoking the NFL’s Tax Exempt Status”.
Seems Cory Booker of New Jersey is proposing that the NFL’s tax exempt status be revoked and the funds generated be used for domestic violence programs.
Did the left have to see Ray Rice clock his girl / wife in the mouth in order to even consider revoking the NFL’s tax exempt status? I mean why the fuk is the NFL tax exempt anyway? It’s a “non-profit”? Ha!
I guess if we hadn’t had a few football players slapping their women around or whipping their four year old, the issue of a tax exempt NFL would never have come up – I guess it was not important enough on it’s own merits. Typical”new left”.
The NFL’s status is the type of issue which should have been brought up by the left years ago – it took the distraction of Ray Rice to bring it to the forefront – not that revocation has a chance in hell of passing.
Money talks – bullshit walks. Call me next time a quarter million people march for anything. I’ll bring the red and black flags. And bring back the old left.

I’m afraid the nation has become so dumbed down, mislead, lied to, and war weary that it’s fallen into a dangerous state of apathy.

I think there’s hope on the local level. Last Nov Seattle (I still vote in Seattle) elected their first socialist, Kshama Sawant, to city council: http://www.democracynow.org/2014/6/5/seattle_s_socialist_city_council_member

I agree – the new “left” is a sorry lot. I wonder if such an incompetent, corrupt a political system can survive much longer. I have learned to avoid those who need to be leaders – they are precisely the ones who should never have power over others…

I had a hard time finishing this post, hits it right on the head. It’s why I hate politics in America, it’s so convoluted don’t know how anybody can make any sense of what’s going on anymore. Wrong is right, right is left and left is right. Shit, it’s just become disgusting.
