Well I think it is now official.
In the eye’s of the world the United States is morally bankrupt.
Unfortunately it has been for some time.
Today, more than 800 Palestinians are dead in Gaza and the attacks by one of the world’s best professional armies against a people without an army continue. Attacks by one of the world’s best air forces against a people without a warplane and without any air defense continue.
We provide $3 billion a year to the attacker; our illustrious Senate voted 100 – 0 in support of the attacks. The beneficiary of our largess thumbs it’s nose at our request for a cease fire; ignores our leaders whenever it suits. After all, it can afford to ignore us for it has no fear of consequences.
Why is that? AIPAC – the American Israel Public Affairs Committee as well as other hard-line members of the Israeli lobby.
There is ample evidence that this recent assault on Gaza was carefully managed, beginning with the kidnapping of three Israeli teenagers and the subsequent kidnapping and murder of a Palestinian teen.
According to an article in the Jewish daily Forward, Israeli authorities knew early on that the three teens were dead but hid the information from the public, even from the parents, for weeks in order to whip up a frenzy against Palestinians. Israel blamed Hamas without any proof and used the kidnappings as the pre-text for an assault which had already been planned. Israel just needed an excuse.

The supine behavior of the American Congress, including some of it’s most “progressive” members is nothing less than shameful and can only be explained by fear of an AIPAC funded primary opponent.
I can hear it now – “I mean, it was going to pass anyway. Why vote against Israel?”.
Meanwhile Secretary Kerry (What ever happened to the John Kerry of 40 years ago?) runs around the Middle-East like a chicken without a head practically begging – “Oh please! Let’s have a cease fire!” He is a perfect reflection of the shallow hypocrisy of the Administration. Our foreign policy is in shambles. Hillary got out just in time in order to avoid any of the blame.
Why did Netanyahu assault Gaza? Not to “defend Israel”; rockets were virtually non-existent over the two years before the death of the teenagers and were ineffectual anyway.
The real reasons were to undermine the recent rapprochement between Hamas and Fatah and what should be obvious now to anyone who is not a complete dunderhead – the two state solution is dead. Netanyahu has no intention of ever giving up the West Bank. He wants to colonize it – so the settlements go on. Unfortunately for him he can’t make the Palestinians go away and he can’t annex it without changing the demographics of the State of Israel. A united Hamas-Fatah leadership however could pose problems if they began to press for real movement toward a two state solution.
It seems like no one learned anything about peace from Northern Ireland. “Not talking to terrorists” led to 30 years of conflict and 35,000 dead. No one would talk to the IRA; not America, not Britain, not the Ulstermen. And the IRA wouldn’t talk to them either. It took years. The IRA would set off a bomb now and then even during the peace negotiations. So would the Ulstermen, each trying to break up the talks. Keeping everyone talking was the key. Keeping Gerry Adams and Ian Paisley in the same room wasn’t easy.
There can be no peace unless all the parties are at the table – without pre-conditions. No one said it will be easy.
We can force that – through the power of the purse. If we had any spine and a bit of humanity.
